SUNSET AND VINE

The serendipitous rescue of a dowager driver from her wrecked Rolls Royce sets up a cascading series of events that lead from the spooky mists of 1930’s Hollywood to the edgy mix of players in today’s Los Angeles. This fast paced thriller with a romantic frosting tosses us square in the middle of family intrigue and celluloid legend. Billy Sunset and Amanda Vine invite you in. Sunset and Vine is Louis Briel’s second novel.

By Billy - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sunset and Vine (Paperback)
Just finished reading Sunset and Vine; what a thrilling ride! I feel as if I've now been through the experience myself through the vivid painting of all the characters involved! I want MORE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd call it FUNset and FINE!, June 27, 2010

,,,super fine, that is. Sunset & Vine is one of those wonderfully done books that you pick up, read a few paragraphs and then can't put down. I had set aside this weekend to read this book and that's exactly what happened to me. The phone would ring and I wouldn't answer it, the doorbell rang and I slumped lower into the chair so as not to be seen. NO one was going to interrupt my rapt attention to this book. I found myself barely stopping to cook and when I did finally make my dinner, the book was still in my hand. I loved how every character was one you could actually "see" and feel. The author, Louis Briel, has a real talent with the turn of a word and the twist of a phrase to keep you hooked until the very last page. Oh, but when I read that last page, I jumped up and said, "Nooo, this can't be the end! I want more!" So what does that tell me? It tells me that Louis Briel did a rip roaring job with Sunset & Vine and also tells me that it is ripe for a sequel. I am crossing my fingers and hope that's what comes about.
So, dear readers of this review, if you're looking for a terrific, fast paced, engrossing novel with some very unexpected twists, this book is for you. Once you read it, I can guarantee that you'll be recommending it to others. It is a 10!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyed This Book, June 21, 2010

I bought this to take on vacation this month. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Always something going on between and around the several characters to keep you reading, and I would be happy to see a sequel!

Meet me at Sunset and Vine, June 14, 2010

At one of its most famous crossroads, patrician Old Hollywood intersects with its 21st Century counterpart in this new thriller from Louis Briel. In Sunset & Vine, loaded with inventive description and a cinematic style that pays homage to Hollywood's glory days, young Billy Sunset's chance rescue of elderly car crash victim, Amanda Vine, thrusts him into the role of amateur detective trying to unravel shady conspiracies of greed and venality. Even as his own life falls apart, Billy's new found quest for justice and truth opens his heart to a world of new possibilities. It's noir of a different color!

Sunset and Vine is Louis Briel’s second novel. His first, Braided Shame, is a twisted mystery featuring a cast of quirky characters acting out on a small southern college campus filled with secrets. It is available in paperback on Amazon.com and at selected bookstores.

Louis Briel / Portrait Painter
A Native Virginian, Louis Briel has achieved international recognition as an American portraitist. Schooled in the Classics, he refined his painting style while earning degrees from Hampden-Sydney College as first-honor graduate and Harvard University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. His art training includes a certificate from the American Academy in Rome and study in Boston with Ann Tabachnick and Morton Sacks. The Smithsonian Institution In 1993 acquired Briel’s portrait of tennis great Arthur Ashe for the National Portrait Gallery. In 1995 the U. S. House of Representatives added his portrait of Rep. Thomas J. Bliley, Chairman of the Commerce Committee, to its Collection. Briel’s haunting portrait of Princess Diana accompanied Elton John on his 1997-98 World Tour and is now part of the singer’s personal collection. It is featured in the new book, “Diana in Art”, compiled by Mem Mehmet (Chaucer Press 2007). Most recently, Briel has worked with Carol Burnett on a posthumous portrait of her daughter Carrie Hamilton, which hangs in the Carrie Hamilton Theatre at the Pasadena Playhouse.
